The 39 drawings in the sketchbook were all probably made in 1874, during Muysken's trip to Italy. Ten of these drawings were done in watercolor, in remarkably bright colors. The watercolor still looks very fresh. There were probably more of these booklets, or separate drawings. The drawings are dated March, September and October. The seven pasted-in drawings on blue-gray paper were made first, in March, but probably pasted in later. The other drawings can be dated from September 28 through October 15, 1874. The booklet also includes an obituary from a Baarn newspaper and a photograph of Villa Uytenbosch in Baarn. These are described under the heading Documentation. The drawings in the sketchbook are described piece by piece. The description includes the subject, technique, signature, dating and scale. The descriptions are done in the order of the pages in the booklet. As a result, the descriptions are not entirely chronological: the September and October drawings are described first, followed by the March drawings. To see the drawings that Muysken made in March and pasted into the booklet, the booklet must be turned over. The booklet is a wonderful complement to other travel sketches that are in the NAI's collection, by other students of Gugel, such as H.J. Jesse and C.T.J. Louis Rieber, as well as by H.P. Berlage, W. Kromhout, M.A. van Nieukerken, J. Wils and J.A. Snellebrand.
