At first, the archive was barely edited and organized. The documentation and photographic material were largely separated and packed in covers with no particular organizing principle. Metal, pergamine and glue residue were removed whenever possible. No more than two copies of identical photographic prints are usually found in a cover, of documentation only the piece in the best condition. The remaining duplicate records are housed in a separate cover with request code d58. A list describing these duplicates and listing the numbers has been added to the management file.Since documents are in most cases undated, an arrangement by subject has been applied. This was based primarily on products and services provided by the Braat company. The date on which these were introduced determined the order in which the documents are presented in the inventory. The documents on products and services are preceded by the more general archival items concerning the factory and its employees. The photographs of buildings have been made into a group because in most cases it is not clear what the firm supplied for these premises and, on this basis, they could not be assigned to other groups. Moreover, the photographs of buildings will more often be consulted independently of the other material for study purposes not related to the Braat firm. All photographs that are not in an album and are kept "loose" have been given their own request number. Incidentally, this does not mean that all photographs have been described individually. Only those photos for which additional information to the general explanation could be provided were given an explanation by application number. Photo albums have been described as a group, because in this case the photos are kept together, so as not to lose the meaning of their coherence. The letters in front of the application numbers have the following meaning:ph:photographs and slidesf:a group of photographs, within this archive these are photo albumsd:documentationg:written documentsSince the same letters are used for photographs and slides, the left column indicates which of the two photographic materials is meant. The archive does not contain color photographic material, so this distinction has been omitted. The type of documentation is clarified in the notes. Where publications are concerned, only a title description is given there. For the designation of processes, a special table has been added to the inventory. If a photograph is not specified with an application number, it is a gelatin silver print on paper. Names of architects, buildings, places and individual photographers are included in the notes if known. Lists of the architects and photographers appearing in this archive conclude this archive.A variety of packaging materials have been used within the archive. Attempts have been made to match the packaging of each archival piece as much as possible to the material condition of the piece and the extent to which it will be consulted. The user of the archive can read in the text under the heading "packaging" how he will find the pieces.
