The three acquisitions that comprise the archive are described in three separate sections in the inventory. This is to explain that two series of project files appear in the inventory: the sketches ('Acquisition 2013') and those from the office archive ('Acquisition 2015'). In addition, the archival materials kept at Hertzberger's home are described under the sub-archive 'Acquisition 2018'. In addition to personal documentation (training drawings, teaching materials, correspondence and photographs, publications), this last acquisition also contains documentation and preparations (including notes) of projects, whether executed or not.

The descriptions and arrangement created by the office of the series of sketches (2013) were adopted in the inventory. This is a large quantity of about 10,000 sketches. Almost all sketches are size A3 or size A3+, a part of sketches is of smaller size and only a very small part is of a larger size.

Within the office archive ("Acquisition 2015"), material from various series of tubes, boxes, etc., has been brought together and described by file for the projects.

Within the sub-archive 'Acquisition 2018', the arrangement of Hertzberger's own material has been followed as much as possible. As a result, material on one and the same subject can often be found in several places in the acquisition. Indeed, Hertzberger used his material again and again, either in original form or as a copy. In some cases this resulted in the creation of many small files and, in some cases, duplicates. Indeed, material - certainly material for publications and teaching - was reused and reworked several times. His notes and assignments for teaching, for example, can be found under the heading "Teaching," but also under the headings "Notes for lectures and lectures" and "Mixed material. Documents were kept in plastic slipcovers, cardboard file folders, drawer boxes (Pas cassettes), file boxes, flat boxes, etc.
The loose, black multi-folder containing a systematic overview of the contents of his lectures from 1973-1980 is housed under the heading 'Education' (see HERTd1544).

The numbering within the 'Acquisition 2018' subarchive continues that of 'Acquisition 2015' (from HERTd47 and HERTt10). The other inventory numbers within this subarchive start from number 1 (HERTav1, HERTf1, HERTn1 and HERTph1).
The photographs of the 2018 acquisition were largely arranged in file boxes and within them in files of polyester photo sleeves. These photo sleeves have not been preserved; however, the descriptions on the photo sleeves have been reproduced in the titles of the f and ph numbers and in the Range and Content section of the individual f and ph numbers. Thus, the descriptions were not invented during the inventory, but taken over verbatim. This includes, for example, a description such as that of HERTf150-2: "ugly, illegal canopy. Usually, however, the descriptions of the photos are more neutral and refer to what can be seen in the photos.
