* brief description:Design of shopping center De Els in Waalwijk, commissioned by F.C. Schravesande (1965-1975). In the first design, the stores are placed in a kind of meander shape in relation to each other, within a square plan. The stores are generally two stories high, above which protrude a cantor tower, a cultural center, storied apartments and a few residential towers. Canopies connect the stores.
In a new 1967 design, the placement of the stores is completely changed and they appear to be placed in random order from one another.
Situation drawings from 1973 (75ff) show that the new shopping strips are to be placed between the existing buildings. Previously, the existing buildings were not shown separately. Two shopping streets are at right angles to each other with two large blocks containing a De Gruyter supermarket and a V&D department store on the corner. Here there is a central square that is roofed with gabled roofs. The supermarket will be composed of one layer with a wide eaves clad in steel sheeting. The shopping strips consist of one layer with possible housing above. On the Great Street side, two layers of housing are planned on top of the stores, covered with a pointed roof. On the Stationsstraat side, the design of the dwellings is identical but they are closed off by a flat roof. The shopping center will be integrated as much as possible within the existing buildings. The surrounding buildings include a Cultural Center, a convent and a school.
