On July 12, 1876, P.J.H. Cuypers was appointed by Royal Decree as (official) architect of Rijksmuseum buildings. He would hold this position of state architect until 1921. Cuypers worked as a private architect, state advisor and (official) architect of the Rijksmuseum buildings.
