Interview with Rotterdam reconstruction architect Ernest Groosman, who himself lived in the Bergpolderflat. Groosman co-designed the post-war Zuidpleinflat.

WITH CROUWEL IN ANTIBES? About MTS in Utrecht, fellow students Arno Nicolaï, Kees Baart de la Faille, Batavian Westerhuis. Military service, then job at architectural and engineering firm Op ten Noort in Utrecht. Goes with Nicolaï to draw concrete structure for a fire station in Middelburg, commissioned by Groosman's father (contractor). Has to resign from Op ten Noort due to study trip with Nicolaï and Westerhuis to Italy. On his return, goes to work for Sybold van Ravesteyn in Utrecht as an architectural draughtsman - Fop Ottenhof is Chef de Bureau there. Moves with Van Ravesteyn's bureau to Rotterdam. Studies and draws animal enclosures for the Blijdorp zoo to be built. Sees Van Ravesteyn as a gentleman architect, like Eschauzier, and Oud. Is deployed as an artilleryman for mobilization in 1939. Marries and goes to work for Wentink (1941/42). Goes to do HBO in Amsterdam. 'Goes into hiding' in The Hague for three months as professional and reserve officers were called up. Has drawn on the interior of the royal yacht Piet Heijn in 1937. Talks about teachers at HBO. HBO with fits and starts because of war and hiding. Works at Van Tijen. Office on New Haven burned down, now lived and worked in Plaslaan apartment. [00.00-31.31]

WITH CROUWEL IN ANTIBES? I-b. Rented room from Maaskant on Jericholaan (Kralingen). Worked on urban design plan Zuidwijk - Rotterdam. Van Tijen also part of NV Volkswoningen. Founded the Bos group (A. Bos, director of the Rotterdam Public Housing Department). Publication 'The city of the future'. Architects first involvement with demography because of the new neighborhood. Groosman received commissions in Zeeland because of father, went to bureau Van Tijen and Maaskant where Groosman worked. Lived in Rotterdam after the war in a "Bakema house. Bakema and Jantje Rietveld and Groosman were to go to England via Portugal during the war. Groosman does not go with them because of pregnant wife, Rietveld and Bakema are caught on the Spanish border and have to work on the Atlantic Wall for a year and a half. Groosman lives temporarily with his wife in Jaap and Sia Bakema's house in Dr. de Visserstraat [Bergpolderflat]. In 1946 call up for military service - Dutch East Indies - which again Van Tijen knew well. At audience with Minister of War, got transfer to Dutch Engineers. Built a lot, many awards, three years. 1950 independent office, lots of housing construction. From 25.20 on membership of Rotterdam Architects Committee (olv De Monchy), gave advice to B&W on land allocation in the inner city of Rotterdam and an experienced architect. Groosman had built nothing in Rotterdam from '47-'50, was "independent. Later houses in Zuidwijk.

Core group housing architecture, architects' initiative, including Verhagen, Berghoef, Van Tijen, Merkelbach, Van Embden, Postel, on minimum dimensions about bedrooms, kitchens. Later developed into nationally established Guidelines and Regulations. The ideal floor plan for the storey house. Plan for Velzen - city by the sea - Dudok and Van Tijen. Anecdote about P.L. Kramer visiting Dudok. Urban plan Vlaardingen (Hogendorplaan), Westwijk. Businesslike and down-to-earth meeting enormous demand, Housing shortage. Starts as a boy with contractor father, was not allowed to go to TH. Did a lot of work for Van Tijen in Zeeland, took that work with him when he left Van Tijen in 1948. Made port buildings, geriatric buildings in Leiden, laboratory Sylvius lab for university in Leiden and later Utrecht and Amsterdam.

About reconstruction of Rotterdam and rebuilding inner city, Van Traa's Basic Plan, inner city, Fledderus and Lijnbaan stores and homes, separation of functions. Springing building line Coolsingel designed by Van Traa. Gnome houses ("I think Verhoeven is a treasure of a man") on the former Heliport site. Expansion districts Zuidwijk, Pendrecht, Alexanderpolder, Ommoord, Hoogvliet. Van Traa sought support from private architects mbt Het Basisplan (Van Tijen en Van den Broek, Kraaijvanger, Verhagen) OpRo. Drawings were made at Van Tijen's office.
