The Bleijs collection consists of watercolors, plate works, pen drawings and photographs, and a party album of drawings of buildings designed by Bleijs. This album was compiled by his students in 1889 on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as an architect. Architect W. Kromhout designed the leather cover, and several artists and architects honored their teacher with watercolors and pen drawings of his buildings. The Party Album was numbered A 1 through A 50 in an earlier description of the archive, and this numbering has been maintained. The collection of watercolors, pen drawings, documentation and photographs had been described in a placement list, and numbered from 1 - 151, which included the drawings on loan from Mr. C.J. Bleijs (1-74) and the drawings of stained glass paintings donated by Ms. M.E.A. Gehlen (75-151). Drawings that were added to the collection later had numbers t 1 - t 22. The acquisitions from 1997 and 1998 were not yet numbered or described.Because the drawings from one project were scattered throughout the collection, it was decided to organize them by project and renumber them. The various drawings were thus described chronologically per project, with drawings and documentation (that is, the printed drawings of buildings by Bleijs in overprints of magazines) packaged together and assigned a t number and the photographs packaged separately and assigned a ph number. If drawings of a project also appear in the Album, this has been mentioned in the description. In the explanatory notes it is always stated whether the drawings are original or overprints. In the concordance at the back of this catalog the new numbers are given with the old numbers. For the projects that were not dated, but could be dated with the help of the literature, the year is put between square brackets. The drawings for which this did not apply have been placed under 'undated drawings'.In this way, the catalog first describes the dated drawings, then the undated ones. This is followed by the personalia. Finally, the pieces from the party album are described. The drawings in the party album have a chronological order and were described accordingly. These drawings, which were loose in the cover, were packaged separately. The old accesses to and descriptions of the collection are also retrievable. After the list of works and the concordance, the catalog concludes with a reference to two archives where Bleijs's drawings are also to be found, and with the complete text of the auction catalog, as published in 1903.Bleijs in other archivesIn the Gemeentearchief in Amsterdam and in the Rijksarchief Noord-Holland in Haarlem, there are still a number of drawings of projects by Bleijs that were acquired at the 1903 auction.
