My Indian journey : thoughts on culture and art
Berlage traveled in India for three months in 1923. There he had many conversations with architects and immersed himself in the architectural discussion about Indo-European architecture. Famous statement of his is: 'After this contemplation, therefore, it becomes quite clear that a true Indo-European architecture can only arise when the Javanese can not only practice the profession of architecture themselves, but can also obtain the complete training for it in India.' About the Technical College he writes: 'For the dominant grouping of the two grandiose halls of drawing and materials hall, as wing buildings of the lower, open peristyle, is a masterpiece of architectural effect.' 'But also the beautiful design of the T.H.S., a complex of different courts after a general Javanese motif, was disturbed. under pressure of austerity, now, satisfied but not satisfied, another is busy with the expansion, while Maclaine Pont has given and would have given even further a very successful proof of an Indo-European style, even of a typical Javanese character.'
