In this book, after an introduction to nineteenth-century architecture, Kropholler shines his light on the development of architecture in the twentieth century. He does not hide his own opinion. He clearly shows his disgust with the Amsterdam School, functionalism and the work of Dudok and shows us his own preference for the nineteenth-century revival of medieval architecture with Cuypers and by extension Berlage and traditionalism. Theoretical topics from previously published books also come up to indicate how Kropholler sees his ideal architecture. Remarkably, Kropholler does not illustrate the work with important examples of the various twentieth-century movements in architecture, but only with examples of buildings designed by himself. In addition to the tone of the narrative, this demonstrates the firmness and self-assertion with which Kropholler expresses himself. It almost seems as if Kropholler's views are the only correct ones.
