Development of post-war built residential areas and functioning of local housing markets in the Netherlands

For three groups of municipalities, namely: the four large cities, the remaining 29 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, and 137 suburban municipalities, a comparison was made of the characteristics of the housing stock, distinguished by construction period and housing type, and of the rate of change during the last five years. The conclusions relate to the functions that different parts of the housing stock perform in the housing market, with a clear difference between the three municipality categories revealed. The process of displacement of existing housing types by the new construction of more attractive housing types is also discussed.
