A very large proportion of Southern Mediterranean households live in old, presumably poor, but low-cost housing. They are not among the financially weaker groups. Households of Surinamese/Antillean origin are in relatively new housing with high housing costs. There are only minor differences with the housing costs of Dutch households. Northern Mediterranean people are relatively the best housed. In large cities, the housing situation of immigrant and Dutch households differs less from each other than in other municipalities. Housing distribution leads to partial leveling. Relocation will aim to improve the housing situation in the future. Mediterranean households orient themselves strongly toward low-cost rental housing.
