Joseph Maria Olbrich : 1867-1908 : Architekt und Gestalter der frühen Moderne
Even with his spectacular early work, the Vienna Secession building (1898), Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) succeeded in creating a seminal structure that was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as the "pioneer of modern design." Ten years later, his last works-especially the famous exhibition building and Hochzeitsturm (Nuptial Tower) ensemble on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt (1908)-struck the arc to architectural Expressionism. During this final decade of creative work, Olbrich proved himself to be a universal artist. Completely devoted to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, besides his broad spectrum of construction tasks he designed interiors, gardens, a cornucopia of practical and decorative objects, prints, and complete architectural exhibitions. This comprehensive publication is a tribute to Olbrich, the universal artist, presenting his entire oeuvre in what is destined to become a standard work.
