Even with his spectacular early work, the Vienna Secession building (1898), Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) succeeded in creating a seminal structure that was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as the "pioneer of modern design." Ten years later, his last works-especially the famous exhibition building and Hochzeitsturm (Nuptial Tower) ensemble on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt (1908)-struck the arc to architectural Expressionism.
