Technology is omnipresent and has changed society. It makes an undeniable contribution to the prosperity and well-being of our society. However, the person behind technology often remains unknown. Unlike artists, writers and politicians, we rarely read about the personal motivations, thoughts and life stories of engineers. The dividing line between the "two cultures" (alpha and beta) identified as early as 1959 by C.P. Snow undoubtedly plays a role here. Unlike in countries such as Russia or the United States, there are few examples in the Netherlands of engineers elevated to the status of hero or corypha. Which Dutch technicians would qualify? What is the place of the engineer in public space in 2010? Does biographical research provide an entrance to the work of engineers for a large audience? A select group of authors explores these and similar questions in this book.
