Utrecht has a lot of extraordinary architecture and urban planning. From the beginning of the era, a rich urban hub of structures, streets, squares and parks developed here. Yet no era was more influential than the 20th and early 21st centuries. Explosive population growth and developments in industry, commerce, science and transportation, resulted in impressive building production. Urban planning became increasingly important and numerous plans for residential areas, shopping areas, traffic systems, industrial zones and parks saw the light of day. Each chapter deals with a coherent part of Utrecht with an introduction to its origins, urban design and development over time. This is followed by concise texts on the most important architectural and urban design objects for each area. One hundred and fifty famous and forgotten, high-profile and beloved projects pass in review, from the first Dutch rosary from 1912 and Herderplein from 1953 to Hoog Catharijne from 1973 and the University Library from 2004.
