The author provides an overview of the history of Roman Catholic Schalkwijk. Extensive attention is given to the building history of the village's R.C. church. Under the pastorate of Joh. Nanning a new domed tower with spire above the entrance to the church was built in 1818 to a design by the hagener Adrianus Tollus. Construction had begun on Aug. 2, 1818, and by Dec. 24, the tower was completed. In the spring of 1818, the R.C. cemetery was laid out. Neither pictures of the original church with presbytery, nor of the later added church tower, nor of the building after the expansion have survived, so that no impression can be gained of what it looked like. In 1878 a new church was built under pastor Hilhorst because the old building had become too small and was in too poor a condition.
