Rietveld's Chair is the result of art historian Marijke Kuper's search for the genesis, use and reception of this modern classic. The book contains new facts and visual material and an overview of all pre-war examples of the chair known so far. It is an open overview, because there is still a chance that an unknown or lost original red and blue chair might just turn up somewhere.... In the documentary by graphic designer and filmmaker Lex Reitsma, furniture restorer Jurjen Creman reconstructs the first, lost version of the chair. Professor Erik A. de Jong uses family photos and letters to tell how his grandparents, the architect Piet Elling and Diek Elling-Nijland, lived with their Rietveld furniture in the 1920s. In sharp contrast are images of auction and art dealing that show that today the chair has lost its original function and instead has acquired an iconic value that can be expressed in the astronomical sums paid for it. Museum status is explained by curators from internationally renowned museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
