The renewed significance of rail worldwide is causing conceptions of the classic station to change. That station is once again becoming part of the city, while at the same time ensuring that the train is linked to other modes of transport such as the car and the bicycle. Moreover, the discussion about the sustainable city puts the importance of a good public transport system, the linking of different modes of transport, the accessibility of urban regions and inner-city building back on the agenda. The challenge is to make station areas pleasant and well-functioning places in the city and to ensure that these areas are easily accessible: a spatial task linked to a mobility ambition.
