The first three reflections collected here form the text of a series of lectures given to the microphone of the V.P.R.O. during 1941. They describe the influence of our soil, our history and our religion on the character of our people. They were supplemented by three others in which the Dutch national character, as it is expressed in our literature, architecture and visual arts, is discussed.
