Sustainable (re)development has become an obvious principle in urban planning. In theory and practice, however, there is not yet an unambiguous definition nor an approach to sustainable urbanism. In the design study 7Up, different approaches to sustainable urbanism were tried out at the Zevenkamp site. Three different approaches were chosen for the district: an eco-system approach; a flows approach and the eye-level perspective of residents. The result is a new comparison of different forms of sustainable urbanism and offers insight into promising combinations and possible conflicts. The methodology of design research provides not only a set of designs for a sustainably restructured Zevenkamp, but also design solutions that are mostly generic for this type of task. The research and design results have therefore been expanded to include some fifty design guidelines. This makes it a tool that can be applied site-specifically in integral sustainable (re)development.
