The acclaimed Revolt chair, designed in 1953 by Friso Kramer (b. 1922) for manufacturer Ahrend/De Cirkel, is an icon in the history of industrial design in the Netherlands. Even at its introduction, the chair was considered highly innovative and quickly won a permanent place in classrooms, offices and homes worldwide. One of the best-selling chairs in the Netherlands, the Revolt was a revolutionary typical reconstruction design by Friso Kramer, an important pioneer of industrial design in the Netherlands. Completely new was the use of plastic. Less striking, but no less innovative, was the construction of the chair. Instead of tubes, which were most commonly used for cheaper utility furniture at the time, Kramer used sheet steel for the frame.
