In the early 1950s, a modest-looking museum building of glass and rebuilt concrete emerged on Amsterdam's Van Baerlestraat that was to become talked-about. Spiritual father of the first expansion of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam was director Willem Sandberg, whose ideas on art presentation both provoked fierce criticism and were emulated internationally.
