Flowing and staying : toward an integrated design vision for traffic and public space
Good traffic design results in an outdoor space that is efficient and focused on safe flow, while good public space is pleasant to be in. The two disciplines, traffic engineering and urban planning, have different starting points that are often perpendicular to each other. However, good cooperation between traffic engineers and urban planners is necessary for optimal integrated design. Especially in the case of important traffic arteries where living, working, cycling, walking and shopping also take place, such as the Ceintuurbaan in Amsterdam, the Lasondersingel in Enschede and the Utrechtseweg in Oosterbeek.
For the first time, Stromen en verblijven brings both disciplines together and examines how traffic guidelines and advice can be better combined with high-quality public space. Essays by both traffic and urban planners discuss the differences between the two disciplines, ten case studies illustrate practice, and an extensive glossary finds a common language that eliminates the confusion and promotes cooperation.
