Renewing urban renewal : plea for design power
Many of the urban renewal neighborhoods in the Netherlands are in need of improvement after 30 years. The publication Vernieuwing van de stadsvernieuwing tries to find a new perspective for urban renewal now that the national government is dropping out.
Between 1970 and 1990 an unprecedented renewal of pre-war neighborhoods in the larger cities of our country took place. What began as "building for the neighborhood," the protest against large-scale demolition, we now know as "urban renewal. When the dust clears, neighborhoods have changed dramatically. Large numbers of affordable housing and social amenities have been added. But economic activity has disappeared and the quality of public space has not always improved. Neighborhoods have also sometimes become isolated from the rest of the city. After 1990, some of the old urban renewal neighborhoods rose and became popular (and expensive) residential areas. Other neighborhoods continue to have problems despite renewal.
Four neighborhoods that did not receive an economic "boom" are pilot areas in this book: Amsterdam Indische Buurt, Leiden Havenkwartier, Rotterdam Feijenoord and The Hague Schilderswijk. Design studies show how economics, infrastructure and public space are the keys to new strategies in neighborhood improvement.
