Rotterdam Central Station has undergone a complete transformation. Where until a few years ago stood the extraordinary station building by Sybold van Ravensteyn, there now stands a transport terminal ready for the demands of 21st century travelers. Years of design and construction have gone into it, and on March 13, 2014, it was officially opened. The Engineering Office of the Municipality of Rotterdam in collaboration with Team CS worked on the construction of the remarkable station hall, whose canopy of dented stainless steel extends far over the Station Square. Bouwen boven en onder de grond leads the reader around the wonderful world of building above and below ground on the complex infrastructure of Rotterdam Centraal interchange. It also extensively highlights the crucial role of the Engineering Office in its realization. The hall and canopy of Rotterdam Central are the tip of an enormous iceberg: beneath the station, an underground world is revealing itself that extends into the inner city. Architect Maarten Struijs, working at the Rotterdam Engineering Office, designed the new Rotterdam Central metro station, which offers travelers a sea of space compared to the old station. He was also responsible for the design of the bicycle shed, the traffic tunnel under the Weena and the parking garage under the Kruisplein with a connection to the Schouwburgplein garage. All this was done to ensure that travelers to and from the station would experience as little nider as possible from car traffic on one of Rotterdam's most important traffic arteries.
