Peace, space and beauty. In the middle of our country, remote and yet easily accessible. That is Radio Kootwijk. A place with a special history. Around 1920 a transmitting station was built in the desolation of the Kootwijkerzand, surrounded by a living and working community of some 150 people, from all parts of the country, who lived and worked in considerable isolation amidst the Veluwe nature. In the book "RADIO KOOTWIJK. Biography of a broadcasting station and a village in the heart of the Veluwe' the author Cees van der Pluijm, born in 1954 in Radio Kootwijk and living there until 1975, brings together in one coherent narrative the facts of radio history, the special architecture, life in an enclosed social context, the role of nature and landscape, and the new era after the closure of the broadcasting station. It also highlights the special role of Radio Kootwijk in World War II and how the Germans used the station, its connection to Alan Turing and the enigma code, and the idle resistance of the Radio Kootwijkers. Source research and interviews with experts and the latter who lived through much of Radio Kootwijk's nearly centennial history led to a well-researched reference work.
