The imaginative oeuvre of architect Sybold van Ravesteyn (1889-1983) is atypical of twentieth-century architecture in the Netherlands in style and whimsicality. After a brief flirtation with the Amsterdam School, Van Ravesteyn developed as an inventive designer in the New Business style. Out of a desire for grandeur and frivolity, from 1935 he turns into an advocate of a highly personalized new style, the Dutch neo-Baroque, with ornamentation, applied art and frivolous furniture.
