A piece of mine goes a few times : on art and documentation

A work of art cannot exist without documentation, without messaging that it exists and how we should frame it. Documentation is done through written and spoken texts, photographs, films, sound carriers, reproductions, replicas and now especially through jpegs, live streams, social media and other digital channels for information dissemination and commentary production. The work of art is no longer autonomous, as a previous century wanted it to be. A work of art is where it is talked about. The relationship between original and documentation has completely shifted in the last 30 years. The original is now a storage issue rather than an aura-laden carrier of the art experience. Documentation keeps a work or oeuvre alive and transmits it to later generations and newer media.
