Since April 1, 2003, Amsterdam has been building the North/South Line, a project that regularly makes the national press. Underexposed to the construction is that the city's old houses and other buildings remain in place in the process. As part of the construction of the North/South Line, Bureau Monumenten & Archeologie spent four years examining the buildings along the line between Central Station and Weteringcircuit. Buildings hundreds of years old, which have since been altered, transformed, sometimes demolished and rebuilt. The route along the North/South line shows how Amsterdam has offered space for development and use for hundreds of years, without alienating itself in the process. This has happened despite drastic changes in function, infrastructural measures and social shifts. The mechanisms influencing all these changes are revealed in an introductory essay. A surprising photo section shows the changes that have taken place over the past hundred and fifty years.
