This architectural guide gives a picture of what architecturally distinguishes the area from Waalwijk to Hilvarenbeek from the rest of the Netherlands. The character of the architecture in this region from the mid-nineteenth century onwards has been determined by the prominence of industry and of the Catholic Church. With the disappearance of industry and secularization, a new Central Brabant characteristic has been added over the past fifty years: the reallocation of disused industrial and Catholic heritage. Furthermore, the region is distinguished by a wide presence of exceptional residential architecture, and there are buildings that are so exceptional that they deserve a place in a guide regardless of whether they fit a theme.
