The book 'New Babylon. To Us the Freedom' is published to accompany Constant's retrospective exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum The Hague (May 28 to September 25, 2016). A world without borders. People who do not have to work, but thanks to full automation are free to play and travel. Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) depicted his ideas about a new kind of man (the homo ludens), society and architecture in one of the most visionary and extensive projects in postwar art history: New Babylon. He would work on it for nearly twenty years, until 1974. To this day, his global city of the future is a source of inspiration for many visual artists, thinkers and architects, including Rem Koolhaas.
