Constant. Space and color : from Cobra to New Babylon

Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) is best known as the co-founder of the international Cobra group and as the inventor and creator of the New Babylon project. This publication highlights for the first time a third influential period of his artistic practice, during which he made his way from Cobra to New Babylon and managed to constantly renew himself. In the 1950s Constant sought new means to contribute as an artist to the reconstruction of society after the ravages of World War II. Important developments in urban planning and technology were reflected in his work. In the spatial effect that colors have, Constant saw opportunities for intensive collaboration between visual artists and architects. His ideal was an amalgamation of different disciplines into a new art form that would deal with the entire human living space (habitat). He explored new fields of work and media and also attempted to redefine his position as an artist by entering into collaborations with other artists and designers each time. Together with Gerrit Rietveld, he worked on a model interior exhibited at the 1954 manifestation "Kleurharmonie in uw woning" in the Bijenkorf department store. With Aldo van Eyck he worked on "a space in color" on the occasion of the exhibition "Man and House" at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1952. Together with the American experimental filmmaker Hy Hirsh, Constant made the film "Gyromorphosis" (1958), shown at his first solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1959.
