Building on the Wild Coast : history of Suriname's civil infrastructure to 1945
Infrastructure is an important part of Suriname's cultural landscape. Especially in the coastal plain, the original condition has been drastically altered by human intervention. More and less impressive road and water works can be seen everywhere. Or not to be seen anymore, because much has also disappeared again. Suriname no longer looks as it did in 1680. This is mainly because of the physical infrastructure that has been built since then. Its construction has determined where people now live and work and how they get around. And, in fact, it has also determined where most of the residents are. Without plantations, there would have been no slaves and contract workers brought in from Africa and Asia.
The book describes the design and construction of this infrastructure up to 1945: plantations, canals, polders, roads, bridges, locks and railroads. It also describes the many plans for roads, railroads and canals that were not realized. Attention is also paid to persons who played an important role in the realization of these works and to institutional aspects: in what political and administrative context were these works realized?
