Govert Flinck (1615-1660) and Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680) were among the most successful Amsterdam portrait and history painters during the Golden Age. Both artists were pupils of Rembrandt, but once on their own they surpassed their famous master in social and economic stature. Unlike Rembrandt, they received many prestigious commissions throughout their careers from wealthy merchants and influential regents in Amsterdam.
