Coastal Stories is a plea to rediscover our amphibious culture. We must if we are to survive in this water-rich region. However, amphibious culture is not only about coastal safety and economic interests, but also about the rich variety of personal stories of people and their relationship with the coast. The coast is a dynamic place where sand, wind, water and people enter into a relationship together. Just as the sand can rub, so can interests of different groups and individuals on the coast. Which raises the question of who the coast actually belongs to. Bram Esser, writer and explorer of the everyday, has explored the entire coast, from the Zeeland Delta through the sandy beaches of Holland to the Wadden Sea off Friesland and Groningen. He spoke with sandhogs and wanderers in the dunes, with fishermen and sealers in dike pubs, and in the harbors with wreck divers and harbor barons. The stories about coastal safety, nature, economic and personal interests, identity and individuality show what amphibious culture is all about today.
