Photographer Gerry Hurkmans began an unusual project in 1996. He was commissioned to photograph the development of the future Utrecht neighborhood of Leidsche Rijn. Hurkmans recorded the Vinex district for 20 years, and the photos have now been compiled in a book. Hurkmans chose 63 locations that he would photograph every year, each time from exactly the same position. He photographed from a 20-meter high aerial platform to get a unique perspective of the neighborhood. He also occasionally took pictures from a Cessna and photographed the neighborhood from the ground. Twenty years of photos are now bundled in the book: Metamorphosis Leidsche Rijn Utrecht. It shows how a meadow has been transformed into a residential neighborhood. The book includes textual contributions from former prime minister Wim Kok, poet Willem van Toorn, mayor of Utrecht Jan van Zanen and Aart Aarsbergen, editor-in-chief of the Dutch National Geographic, among others.
