With designs for more than 200 small and large buildings for the community, architect Adam Schadee (1862-1937) made a fundamental contribution to the modernization of The Hague. During his tenure as structural engineer of Gemeentewerken from 1891 and as head of the design department from 1905, the city grew explosively and the modernization of society gained momentum. With indomitable working zeal and quickly acquired expertise, Schadee and his staff ensured that the growing demand from The Hague community could be met. Under his supervision and final responsibility as a designer, innovative complexes such as the Electricity Factory, the Second Municipal Gasworks and the Municipal Public Slaughterhouse came about. In addition to these major projects, Schadee was also involved in designing streetcar depots, school buildings, bathhouses, street furniture and offices for the various municipal services.
