Over the past decade, child care has tripled in capacity. Expansion has occurred in brand-new buildings, alone or in conjunction with a school or other organization, and in existing buildings that have been converted into children's centers. Always it is a building that is first and foremost for children and secondarily for staff and parents. A good building for children is a thoughtful building. It is based on clear choices about pedagogical vision, working methods and group composition. It meets practical, functional and technical requirements. And it has an outdoor space that is safe and challenging. There is no blueprint for such a building: visions and working methods differ and so do buildings.
