Destroyed house
Marjan Teeuwen (*1953, NL) creates large-scale architectural installations in buildings that are dismantled after her intervention. She demolishes and strips, intervenes in the construction and structure and builds a new artistic image with the demolition material. Autonomous photographic works are created on the basis of these installations.
In her work, the constructive power of building goes hand in hand with the power of destruction and decay. Floors are tilted or fall perpendicularly; walls are partly or completely knocked out. Stacks of debris branch out through the building like a virus, covering all the walls or carefully arranged into architectural sculptures. There is only a short line of artists cutting into buildings, artists perforating buildings. Gordon Matta-Clark is the pioneer of transforming architecture into sculpture. Richard Wilson and Urs Fisher also sometimes take this approach. Marjan Teeuwen defines her own comprehensive and radical approach. In 2016/2017, Teeuwen is realizing Devastated House Gaza. By working in occupied territory, the social context infiltrates her work in a powerful way. The tension between the artistic and political context comes to a head. Precisely by reinforcing the artistic context, she increases autonomous significance in this distinctly politically sensitive region.
