Many iconic and often monumental buildings in Medemblik, Oostwoud, Midwoud, Nieuwe Niedorp, Winkel, Abbekerk and dozens of other West Frisian towns were designed by one architect: Arnoldus Teunis van Wijngaarden (1819-1900). His oeuvre includes at least 57 buildings - churches, town halls, parsonages, schools, orphanages and almshouses and post offices - 41 of which can still be admired today. As many as seven of them have national monument status. Yet A.T. van Wijngaarden, who was also Medemblik's city architect for more than 50 years, has remained virtually unknown until now. Unjustly so, because with his eclectic style, similar to that of his famous contemporary Pierre Cuypers, he left his very own mark on the West Friesland of his time.
