Arnhem and the neighboring villages of Oosterbeek and Velp have a rich history of architectural and urban planning. Over the centuries, the Veluwezoom has exerted a special attraction on the well-to-do. Country houses and estates still bear witness to this. As provincial capital and regional center, Arnhem went through radical changes after the fortifications were torn down in the nineteenth century. The city grew and Velp and Oosterbeek also developed with villa parks and tourism. From the 'Hague of the East', Arnhem developed into a modern residential and working city with progressive projects in the field of public housing, modern school buildings and the construction of industrial estates. Striking offices and richly decorated cultural buildings were also designed. The Second World War, with the Battle of Arnhem and the subsequent period of evacuation and looting, had major consequences for the architecture of Arnhem, Oosterbeek and Velp. Traditionalist and modernist views competed for precedence in the reconstruction process. This book focuses on the designers of the built environment: the architects, urban planners and garden and landscape architects of Arnhem, Oosterbeek and Velp. The period described runs from the eighteenth century, from the first architects we know by name, to the year 1965, when the reconstruction after World War II was completed. The iconic architects are highlighted in a biography and the most striking and unusual buildings are described and shown in detail.
