Vreugd en Rust : welcoming country house with a park by Zocher
With a team of several authors, of which Kees van der Leer took the lion's share, the striking history of the Vreugd & Rust estate in Voorburg is revealed. A major contribution is made by Van der Leer, who examines the history of the estate and describes all the owners in chronological order. After this, Constance Scholten discusses the transition of the estate to a hotel-restaurant. Marie Therese Fort-Claasen discusses in a contribution the construction and significance of a deer park, which can still be found here. Historical green expert Korneel Aschman discusses the park designed by Johan David Zocher Jr. and finally Joost Heuvelink pays attention to the significance of the park in our time.
This country estate experienced its heyday in the 19th century. In those years the Groen van Prinsterer family occupied the estate. Before that, Petrus Jacobus Groen van Prinsterer (1764-1837) had entered into a very advantageous marriage with the puissant rich orphan Adriana Hendrika Caan (1772-1832). He was her family physician and married her in 1797 despite a certain age difference and also despite the fact that contemporaries were somewhat surprised by this union of two rather different characters. Vreugd & Rust was then already owned by the Caan family. After marriage, the couple decided to spend a lot of time in Voorburg, although they owned a monumental city palace in The Hague on Korte Vijverberg. Here in 1801 was born the talented politician Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer, who would later become the founder of Protestant Christian politics. For fans of KBL, he is considered an advocate for the preservation of country houses. Through his efforts Hofwijck, for example, was preserved, although he could not prevent the railroads from violating the original design. He also purchased Kasteel Oud-Wassenaar where he and his wife Betsy van der Hoop spent their married years; a marriage that would remain childless. Betsy was from the country estate De Bult in Steenwijkerland (Ov.).
After the death of the Groen van Prinsterer-Caan couple, a sister of Guillaume inherited the buitenplaats and it later came into the possession of Mari Hoffman (1795-1874). By inheritance it passed to the Van Wassenaer van Catwijck family. Through this childless couple, by will it came into the possession of the Philipse family of Zeeland, with whom one of the Groen van Prinsterers was married, and so it later came again to the noble De Jonge family. A well-known descendant of this family is Jan (Johan Anthoni) de Jonge (1864-1927), a talented painter who left behind, among other things, beautiful drawings and paintings of Vreugd & Rust.
An important aspect of the history of Vreugd & Rust is related to the growing urban development of The Hague. That city managed to purchase Vreugd & Rust in 1917, which was not without much social upheaval. In 1918 it briefly served as a military hospital before being used as Parkhotel Vreugd & Rust. Furthermore, it was in use as a school until it was reinstated as a catering facility in 1987. It still is today.
