Brick is the building material par excellence that has defined the identity of Dutch architecture. Few architects have put brick as prominently on the map as A.J. Kropholler (1881-1973) with buildings such as the Van Abbemuseum, the Waalwijk town hall and the Linnaeushof in Amsterdam. After decades of interest in the work of the Dutch modernists, there seems to be a turnaround now that people are realizing that the work of an architect like Kropholler, labelled as traditional, also belongs to the national heritage. This book highlights the oeuvre of the Roman Catholic architect and places it in its context. Monumentality, identity and craftsmanship are words that come to mind when seeing his work. The book is addressed not only to architects, but to anyone who has an eye for the built environment.
