The editors of Forum No. 4 are intrigued by the living room. It is a space without defined function, form and meaning, a space that is at the same time indispensable. In the living room, the residents stay, without a clear purpose. People hang out there, read the newspaper, have tea with the neighbors or watch TV. Living is a pastime. However, this functionless place is an essential part of living. Here the resident finds rest and himself, detached from activity, here the resident gathers his identity. The contributions in this issue of Forum were made over the past year, largely before the Covid-19 virus forced us to be home a lot. As a result, living has been reinvigorated all at once. Now that we are all "at home," the urge to shape the space in which we live alone or together is growing. The contributions in Forum04 contribute to this redefinition of the living room and living. We unravel the needs of living in the present era. The question is what role living space plays in our desire for shelter, security, intimacy and identity. What architectural resources are available? How do we deal with protecting and showcasing our own space? How do we shape living space in the city, street and home? What is the smallest possible physical own territory and what requirements must it meet?
