Construction activity in Amsterdam
M.E.H. Tjaden was director of Building and Housing Supervision Amsterdam. Here he presents the work of Rutgers and Kramer on Hoofdweg. The original design was a five-story building. When the corners of the block were already designed, the builder, for economic reasons, refused to build the attic. Therefore, the block received a series of vertical masonry bricks, which had no utility purpose but suggested architectural significance and a higher boundary of the building. Furthermore, Tjaden describes the corner solution at the Hoofdweg-Willem Schoutenweg intersection. The left building is by Kramer, the right by Rutgers and the gatehouse by Westerman.
