The Museum Journal appeared six to 10 times a year. Its chief editors included Paul Groot (1980-1989). Museumjournaal began as an initiative of Bram Hammacher (director Kröller-Müller Museum), E.L.L. de Wilde (director Van Abbemuseum), W.J.H.B. Sandberg (director Stedelijk Museum) and V.W. van Gogh. In the early years, Museumjournaal was closely linked to the agendas of the participating museums. The magazine aimed to acquaint the Dutch public with what was going on in the international art world. Later it developed into an independent platform for modern plastic art. Over the years, the editors began to mirror other international art magazines.
