One of the most prominent postwar landscape architects, Nico de Jonge (1920-1997) spearheaded the emancipation of the profession. Under his leadership, the landscape architecture department of the Forestry Commission developed an increasingly emphatic design-oriented approach. Visionary plans saw the light of day in wonderful chalk drawings. As a professor at Wageningen Agricultural University, his excursions to new landscapes made an indelible impression. The Dutch delta region was his domain. Born and raised in Zeeland, he declared his love for the dynamic coastal landscape to everyone. There, on the border of land and water, lay the inspiration for the cultural landscape he advocated. Where man and nature could develop in contrasting, created landscapes. In the book 'Listening Cultural Landscape', Yvonne Horsten-van Santen sketches the context in which Nico de Jonge mastered his craft.
