"Are you renting or did you buy your house?" and "Look how much they are asking for this tiny studio apartment! It comes up in just about every conversation: the housing crisis. House prices going through the roof throughout the Netherlands, unaffordable rents for no more than a chicken coop with no windows or balcony. Many people are forced to resign themselves to the fact that they can no longer afford their dream house. And not a relatively ordinary house either actually. In the process, hundreds of thousands of households struggle to pay the rent every month. Young people are therefore forced to stay with their parents, or return there as boomerang children. And the number of homeless people? That has more than doubled in the past decade. Urban geographer Cody Hochstenbach shows, based on years of research, that the fundamental right to an affordable, adequate, healthy and safe home is less and less obvious. The current housing market does not work for everyone. In fact, it actually increases inequality - between rich and poor, young and old, renter and buyer. Outcast exposes the structural causes of this housing crisis. Skyrocketing housing prices and rents are not a stupid coincidence. Decades of neoliberal politics are responsible for the current malaise; politicians and policymakers are obsessed with home ownership, and affordable rents are low on their list of priorities. If we want to turn the tide, we must break with these housing policies. Hochstenbach shows us - reasoned and fervent - why we must defend the right to a home adamantly. Cody Hochstenbach (b. 1989) is an urban geographer at the University of Amsterdam.
