Society changed dramatically from about 1850, and architecture changed with it. Countless new building types such as post offices, railway stations and department stores were constructed. They were equipped with the latest building materials and technical installations and designed and executed by a host of specialists. The problem is that these enormous and fundamental changes are hardly addressed, if at all, in the survey works of architectural history. In these, the development of architecture is still described on the basis of building styles. This book offers a look behind the facade of Dutch architecture around 1900.
