This anthology of articles by architecture critic Hans van Dijk (1948-2021) was lovingly selected by a group of friends of Hans van Dijk. The choices were discussed at length by the editors (Arjen Oosterman, Bart Lootsma and Christine de Baan), but do not pretend to have any scientific basis. The collection of texts were chosen primarily for their relevance to the present time and for the sharpness and clarity with which they are written. The selection of articles by Hans van Dijk in WonenTABK/ARCHIS, NRC Handelsblad, Forum, Jaarboek Architectuur, etc. provide both a portrait of his work as a "journalist," critic, and editor-in-chief (of Archis), and of an influential generation of architects and the debate at the time on structuralism, urban renewal, (post)modernism, and the legitimacy of architecture. An understanding of Hans van Dijk's work can help find new opportunities for criticism in today's global landscape of architectural publications, in the context of the global climate and inequality crisis. By providing notions and background, a reader can come to their own judgment. With that approach, he managed to put a bottom line in judgment time and again.
