Over seventy works by Mondrian and his De Stijl contemporaries will tour Brazil. The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag has created an exhibition that will travel through the cities of Sao Paolo, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. The museum has the world's largest Mondrian collection and wants to show its art around the world. Director Benno Tempel: "Mondrian is among the five most famous Dutch artists: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Mondrian and Escher. It is great that the Brazilian public will be introduced to this Dutch hero." The exhibition opens Jan. 25 first in São Paulo. The exhibition features both early and late works by Mondrian. By doing so, the museum wants to show that Mondrian's abstract art did not happen overnight. His work became step-by-step more abstract and modern. Tempel: "The visitor sees Mondrian's entire development. From early green landscapes via brightly colored windmills and cubist ovals to his world-famous abstract compositions, whose cast-iron imagery still inspires artists, architects and designers today."
